Easy Quick Healthy Tip 12 – Walking
Especially afer surgery or cancer – or any longterm illness / prolonged period of no exercise, you can often feel a little concerned about exercise and how much you can or should do. Walking is a fantastic way to start as you can take it slowly and keep the walks short as you start and then build on your pace and the length as you feel your strength building.
Another factor that makes walking so fantastic is it’s be proven to be fantastic for your mood. Getting out walking can help with depression and Season Affected Disorder which is prevelant at this time of year. It’s especially effective for SAD if you can get a little sunshine and vitamin D on your skin in this miserable weather. Even when the weather is bad me and mine get out these in our wellies and raincoats (not if its pouring, we’re not mad)!
Going for walks can also be really social, get a group of friends together or your best mate and rather than just sitting on the sofa, get out there. Get all the benefits and there is plenty of time for chat – my kind of exercise.
Walking is also said to be more effective than coffee or a nap at fighting fatigue. So the more tired you are, the more vital it is you get out there.
Final thing I am going to say about walking… it can really help clear your head and blow the cobwebs away. Especially if you have been ill or stuck inside a lot lately, you can come back feeling so fresh and revitalised for being outside and getting some fresh air in your gills. Even if you live in the middle of a city, the great thing about England is you are never to far from a park but if the City is your thing; walk around it, investigate it, look at the architecture, enjoy the sounds, just get out there!
I have missed a couple of days (life getting in the way) so you are getting 3 for the price of 1 today.
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 9, 10 and 11 – Holistic Therapies
Holistic therapies are not only my speciality, they are also amazing. Right now I am talking specifically about Massage, Reflxology and Aromatherapy.
Yes massage is good for the health – isn’t that the best news?! You actually have a reason to go for a massage! Massage stimulates the circulatory and lymphatic systems, meaning it helps blood deliver all the good stuff to your cells and takes all the crap away, keeping you nourished on a cell level. It helps to relax you and we all know the damamge that stress can do to your body. Unknotting muscles can help with your posture and with headaches. Basically go and get a massage, your body needs one!
Like massage it assists the circulatory and lymphatic systems and stress. Reflexology treats the body from the inside out. For a more comprehensive article on how Reflexology can help, view my Time for a Reflex Detox article here.
There are essential oils for everything. The best thing to do is contact an Aromatherapist (such as myself) and find out which ones are best for you specicifically. But its January so we are thinking detox! Grapefuit oil is a winner for stimlating the systems and getting everything moving. You should never put Aromatherapy oils directly onto the skin put you could add a drop or two to your body lotion in the morning and massage it into the skin. That lovely summer citrus smell alone will get you motivated… especially in this weather!
Get Your Juice On!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 8 – Carrott and Apple Juice
Seriously the most delicious and easiest juice. I think if you are thinking about starting juicing this is the place to start. Even my kids will drink this juice and that is saying something (they generally treat vegetables as one would posion).
I tend to use the same amount of carrots and apples, you can alter how much of each goes in to suit your taste but basically 2 apples, two or three carrots, cut then into large churnks, put through the juicer and hey-presto and little cup of nutrients right there!
Carrots (like oats), drag toxins out the bowel as they go through so can really help in giving you a healthier, cleaner bowel…. particularly important for us Bowel Cancer people, but for general health is still as must.
You do need a juicer for this but if you are thinking about a seriously healthy diet you are probably considering getting one anyway?! Check out websites for 2nd hand ones if they seem a bit expensive to you.
Water, water, everywhere!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 7- Get your thirst on!
You know this, I know you know this, drink water. Its rule number one and even more important if you are detoxing and trying to be healthy because it helps flush all those toxins and nasties out your body. Ideally you want to drink one and half litres a day.
But really….. I didn’t even need to tell you that…. you already knew! 🙂 xx
The No-Bake Treat!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 6 – Yummy Frozen Banana Bars
This recipie was given to me by a friend recently so I had to try and share with you straight away! Frozen Banana Bars. These are also great for anyone who is on a Raw Food Diet.
Take 2 bananas, 1 cup of dates, 1 cup of cashew nuts, stick them all in a blender until smooth. Pop into a dish and bang it in the freezer until firm (about 3 to 4 hours). Cut into small squares and keep in the freezer and you are good to go.
A seriously healthy no bake treat. Let’s just hope my kids think so too! 🙂
Give yourself a good Scrub down!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 5 – Scrub Away with an Exfoliator
Basically your skin consists of cells moving from the bottom layer to the top layer of skin. At the bottom they are beautiful big plump cells, by the end they are slightly dried and tired looking…. if you think opf a grape turning into a prune…. you get the idea!
What exfoliating does is remove those dried up tired cells by gentley taking off the very top cells and exposing the lovely plumper one’s underneath.
You have to be careful not to scrub too hard or you can damage the underneath cells or even expose ones baby ones that aren’t ready to exposed to the harsh world at the moment and cause even more damage making them look worse (really don’t want this) and not to often. 2 or 3 times a week is plenty.
Exfoliating will also help rid the skin of any toxins that have built up from environmental factors that you skin is exposed to all of the time and give the skin a really good clean.
You can even make your own Exfoliating Masks at Home using everday products, this is also great as it ensures you aren’t putting any nasties on your skin! For more information check out…. http://http://www.ehow.com/way_5426317_homemade-exfoliating-scrubs.html
TOP TIP: A common misconception with exfoliators is that you should exfoliate all the time if you have oily skin to remove all the oil but the reality is this can cause the opposite to be true. If you keep completly stripping the skin of oil your skin thinks ‘oh! There’s no oil, better produce a load more’. Keep it balanced by exfoliating 2 or 3 times a week.
Get more nutrients in…
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 4 – Add a little bit of Linwoods Super-Mix
Sometimes we spend to long thinking about all the things we don’t want to eat and not what we should be eating. One of the best bits of advice I got from The Fairy Food Mother was to just think about how you are going to get all the good stuff in and chances are all the bad stuff will start to fall away. For someone like me this was fantastic advice as it meant my focus was on the good stuff.
Obviously it doesn’t have to be this brand but I do love it and it tastes fantastic. I add a teaspoonful to smoothies, on my porridge, sprinkled on salads, anywhere I can think of I chuck some in.
Just keep trying to get more nutrients in, anyway you can!
Need to start getting moving!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 3 – Get A Bit of Davina in Your Life
I love Davina, I think I have all her DVD’s because I think they are fab, when I have the time. I am one of the many who says…. but I don’t have time for exercise! And its true, I really don’t… really, but that is what I am thrilled to bits with her latest release which has just arrived. Why do I love it so much? Each section is only 15 minutes, so only I need 15 minutes of time a day…. think I can just about manage that?!
Quite possibly the easiest thing you can do to detox!
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 2: Skin Brushing
It works by stimulating the lymphatic system, which removes toxins from cells. The lymphatic system is just under the skin so you don’t need to apply to much pressure. Always work towards the heart, brushing over the whole body. That means;
- Up your arms from the wrist to shoulder
- Up the legs from ankle to hip
- Circular motions around the belly-button
- From your breastbone, under your breast to underarm, then over the breast to underarm
- Brush from spine, over shoulder to underarms. Down either side of the spine. The from middle of lower back round to the pelvis bone (obviously all these ones are easier with a long handled brush).
Ideally you want to skin brush first thing in the morning before your shower.
You buy a skin brush in Boots and I imagine most other pharmacies, for around £6 or £7.
Happy brushing, Nicola x
Whilst we are all trying to get healthy and detox in January, I thought I would give you an easy quick health tip everyday, to help you on your way….
Easy Quick Healthy Tip 1: Add a handful of rolled oats to a smoothie.
As rolled oats pass through the bowel they drag all toxins out with then, helping you keep a nice clean healthy bowel. On top of all the lovely vitamins and minerals you are already getting from your smoothy.
This smoothie is a punt of blueberries, two bananas, handful of organic rolled oats, 200ml of milk and about 20 ice cubes, all blended together, made 4 full glasses, one for each member of the family! Delicious!
